Separate three different tasks
A statutory reporting obligation, a voluntary sustainability disclosure and an operational improvement are different tasks. A hotel can reduce energy use and improve work without publishing a formal report. Conversely, a long report does not prove good performance. Banks or corporate clients may request information; their request does not automatically make the hotel subject to CSRD reporting.
First establish who is requesting the information and why. Is it for financing, a tender, a group report or guest communication? Agree the reporting period, organisational boundary and format. Then identify reliable information already available. Explain gaps and give a collection date rather than presenting estimates as measured facts.
CSRD after the 2026 Omnibus reform
Directive (EU) 2026/470 generally narrows the ordinary EU scope to companies exceeding 1,000 employees AND €450 million annual net turnover; parent companies are assessed on a consolidated group basis. Legal form, exemptions and special cases still matter. Reporting-related amendments require national transposition by 19 March 2027, with separate 2025/2026 transitions. For an individual family-run hotel, group membership is often more relevant than room count. A property may use a brand while remaining legally independent; another may belong to a large group. Keep ownership information available and have complex cases assessed by an accountant or auditor. Avoid relying on old online tables with superseded thresholds.
Austria: do not skip national transition rules
Austria’s NaBeG entered into force on 19 February 2026. Section 908 UGB contains transitions, including an exemption from the specified new reporting requirements for businesses with no more than €450 million turnover or 1,000 employees. However, paragraph 2b can preserve earlier requirements. Being below the threshold does not therefore mean that every reporting duty disappears. Check existing obligations and the financial year-end as well as company size. Properties outside Austria need to consider the law of their own jurisdiction. This overview provides orientation; a definitive assessment requires company-specific facts. Keep the assessment, date and responsible adviser with your management records.
ESRS: publication is not the same as application
The simplified ESRS adopted on 3 July 2026 are published in Regulation (EU) 2026/1563. On the review date, 8 November, it is not yet in force: Article 3 specifies 10 November 2026 and financial years beginning from 1 January 2027. Article 2 provides options for 2026 financial years, with disclosure of the version used. Source: Regulation 2026/1563, Articles 2–3; checked 8 November 2026.
Businesses preparing formal reports should agree the applicable standard version with their assurance provider early. Smaller properties starting voluntary data collection do not need to work through every ESRS datapoint as a precaution. Choose a framework appropriate to the purpose and distinguish internal management figures from a claim of full compliance with a standard.
Voluntary reporting and value-chain requests
Regulation (EU) 2026/1560 builds on VSME and contains a voluntary standard with basic and comprehensive modules. Published on 21 September, it entered into force on 24 September 2026. Its Article 3 value-chain information cap applies only to financial years beginning from 1 January 2027. It does not turn businesses outside mandatory reporting into mandatory reporters. In practice, maintain an organised evidence folder: company profile, locations, energy bills, water, waste, staffing, training and recorded actions. Give every figure a source, period, unit and owner. This foundation makes repeated requests easier to answer, even when a partner uses its own form. Still review each request for purpose, scope and confidential information.
Support environmental claims with evidence
Directive (EU) 2024/825 strengthens protection against misleading environmental claims; implementing measures apply from 27 September 2026. Particular concerns include unsupported generic claims, inappropriate sustainability labels and product climate-neutrality claims based on offsetting. Austria provided corresponding UWG amendments through Federal Law Gazette I No. 58/2026 for 27 September 2026; checked 8 November 2026.
A useful statement explains the action, period and boundary: for example, “We aligned heating schedules in twelve apartments with occupancy and compare measured use monthly.” Add a specific reduction only after a sound evaluation. Explain weather, occupancy or floor-area changes when they affect comparability. A leaf symbol or a homemade green badge is not evidence.
The Austrian Ecolabel: a separate assessment
The Austrian Ecolabel for accommodation under UZ 200 considers areas including management, energy, water, waste and cleaning. Mandatory and optional criteria reflect different property types and services. Certification is a separate process: neither using my-bookings nor completing our self-check awards the label. If you seek certification, use the current official criteria and establish the relevant property category. Map existing evidence and identify actual gaps. Software can support information and processes, while assessment also includes buildings, purchasing and what happens in practice.
